Benzoin Essential Oil
This delicious Indian vanilla fragranced oil was traditionally used as an incense to dispel evil spirits. It has a sweet, warming, comforting, rich base note odour that blends well with most oils. It is perhaps best known for its use as ‘Friar’s Balsam’ where it is inhaled to ease sore throats and treat loss of voice.
This resinous amber/brown treacly oil has a great calming and uplifting effect on the mind and helps to comfort the sad and lonely, while boosting circulation and easing respiratory disorders. At the same time it boosts the skin's elasticity, while calming redness, itchiness and irritation. Often simply purchased because of its Vanilla like scent, our sales have fallen since we introduced our fabulous Five Fold Vanilla oil, which like Benzoin is obtained using solvent extraction. If you simply want scent, Five fold is the better option.
It is soothing and stimulating at the same time making it very good for using with flu, colds, coughs and bronchitis, where it can soothe symptoms at the same time as helping to increase blood flow and clear mucus. Its ability to get things moving in the body also makes it good for treating problems related to poor circulation such as gout, stomach pain caused by trapped wind, and urinary tract infections. Benzoin can be applied to many kinds of skin lesions such as cracked and chapped skin, chilblains and blisters. It is particularly useful when added to hand or foot creams for people who suffering cracking and extreme dryness.
Its warming properties can also make it useful in massage for easing muscles and joints and the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. It is emotionally comforting, making it good for anyone suffering from loneliness and sadness, especially when combined with Rose or Neroli with their anti-depressant qualities.

HOW TO USE
Baths - blend 5-8 drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil and add to bath
Massages - add 2-3 drops of essential oils to 1 tablespoonful of carrier oil
Vapourisation - add 2-4 drops of essential oils to a burner, aroma stone or aroma stream
